As mentioned in the previous 'Familiarity' write-up, I like people who are moderate and pro-choice. My lack of "extreme" opinions pervades everything in life. But many times I have wondered --- Is this preference a manifestation of the fact that having strongly tilted opinions necessitates one to strongly defend & substantiate it in any intellectual discussion? Perhaps my inability to do so makes it easier to have a moderate floating opinion which is malleable enough to kind of fit in all opinion-groups and not cause a bothersome ruckus. So well, people who do have rigid views feel that being moderate/flexible is a thing of the weak, of the uneducated, confused, of the escapists.
But there lies a beauty in plasticity, a strength in adaptation and an honor in accepting change when thought-wars demand it. To be a true skeptic and truly impartial, is to hone the talent of sifting through evidence and views objectively and choose the one that is true & not the one that suits oneself. Alas! So few of us achieve it, so few of us try, so few of us admire it; We'd rather let the niggling die.
