My obsession with Tragedy

" The permanence of a tragic romance...

The pathos in a death untimely

The flood of emotions, the naked aching
On experiencing a movie unfortunately fated..

The wave of sympathy, minutes of  disturbed pondering
On knowing about an incident heartbreaking..

What does this signify?
That joyous happenings are fleeting
And sad tidings immortalized?

Of course, this is all impersonal
Both crests and troughs matter when it is self-relevant
But when it is of the world around
Memory attaches greater weight to loss & sorrow

We invest more emotionally on hearing of sadness,
learning of outrage, of suffering of a mere stranger
Good tidings of people unknown to us
Do not register, or create a neural fuss

It may be a manifestation of our innate jealousy
That another's happiness does not seep in truly
While his sorry states do make us reflective--

It may rather be that, in the human mind, pathos has evolved more than joy,
Our wiring is infinitely more sensitive to occurrences that have the power to destroy

Well, one can only wonder why we respond the way we do,
But of course, it may only be me, for everyone else this may not hold true.. "

This is an attempt to put to flow my preferences for movies with a tragic flavour, my compulsion with watching disturbing videos, reading about distressing news with shocked fascination, every instance accompanied by an emotional outpour yet continuing the same cycle...my threshold for enjoying happy-tinted media is much higher. I have often wondered about my "weird" preferences which contrast very widely with that of most of my friends. My tastes may change and I might be a totally different person tomorrow, but for now this is unfeigned..
